10 Things You Probably Don't Know About The New Barcelona Coach (Quique Setién)

Quique Setién is set to be the next FC Barcelona boss. The Cantabrian coach signs with Ernesto Valverde until June 30, 2022 and thus takes over. So let's look at 10 things the new man in charge will know.

1) The beginnings of Quique Setién's football were in beach soccer, a sport he played with the national team in.

2) He is known as "El Maestro" at Racing Santander, and is one of the club's idols because of his time as a player there. He played there in two stages for 12 seasons, and in the 2001/02 season he also coached the Cantabrian side, achieving promotion to LaLiga.

3) Setién is the third trainer from Cantabria in the history of Barça, following Enrique Orizaola (1961) and Laureano Ruiz (1976).

4) Setién faced Barça 22 times as a player, recording five wins, five draws and twelve losses and scored two goals against Barça. Once in a Barça v Logroñés fixture (2-1, league season 1990/91) and also in the Racing v Barça league match in 1994/95 (5-0)

5) As a coach, Setién has played seven times against Barça, with six defeats recorded and one win. The win was in the 2018/19 season at the Camp Nou, in the playoffs.

6) As a coach, he managed Santander Racing, Poli Ejido, Logroñés, Lugo, Las Palmas and Betis. He also served as Equatorial Guinea's coach during a game.

7) Sergio Busquets, during one of his visits to Camp Nou, gave him a shirt on which he wrote: "To Quique with love and admiration for your way of looking at football. All the best."

8) Setién has coached former Barça players Bartra, Kaptoum, Tello, Sanabria, Araujo, Halilovic and Kevin-Prince Boateng and current Barça player Junior Firpo.

9) The current Barça coach has always praised Barça and Leo Messi, who he sees as "the pleasure and the greatest player in history." The last time Setién has done so was after a Messi display at Benito Villamarín.

10) One of Quique Setién's passions is chess and he has played against former World Champions Anatoli Karpov and Gary Kasparov.
