Amotekun: Fayemi Reacts As Govt Declares South West Outfit Illegal

On Tuesday, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi responded to the Nigerian government's statement describing "Operation Amotekun," a south-west security organization, as illegal.

In a statement signed by the Federation Attorney General's Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations and Minister of Justice, Dr Umar Gwandu, the government said the establishment of Amotekun is not backed by any established law in the country.

"The establishment of the "Amotekun" paramilitary organization is illegal and runs counter to the provisions of Nigerian law," Malami said.

Fayemi talking to newsmen in the state said South-West Region governors in Nigeria are studying the recent declaration that Operation Amotekun is illegal.

Speaking to newsmen at a press dinner with the state's media, Fayemi said the region's governors would have to review the matter before they declare a stand on the position of the federal government.

The South-West Governors set up the codenamed regional security outfit, Operation Amotekun to address the region's insecurity issues and allay people's fears.

“I don’t have an answer to this individually because I have not been adequately briefed on the new stand.

“I have just heard of that from you (newsmen) now. I will try to find out the position of the governors of the South West states. You know I do not speak for the governors. “If what you are saying is true, there will be an appropriate reaction to it,” Fayemi said.
