Jealous Wife Sets Self Ablaze In Kano

Tragedy struck Wednesday in the ancient city when a 28-year-old Rabi Musa, six-year-old mother, died on Wednesday after she allegedly set herself on fire at Kano State.

The tragic incident took place at Sabuwar Unguwa, Gayawa ward of the state's Ungoggo Local Government district.

According to a neighbor who did not want her name in print, Late Rabi's death might not be unrelated to the prolonged crisis she had withher co-wife, who was taken by her husband as a second wife about six months ago.

Narrating the incident, the neighbor said that when her husband, Badamasi Sufyan went out to a nearby mosque for morning prayer, late Rabi, who allegedly died with pregnancy, was said to have set herself on fire.

According to her, he found his wife in flame when the husband returned home, and rushed outside to cry out for help.

"As good Samaritans were bumping into the house to rescue the lady, she had already been burned out of recognition.

"We all gathered here in mourning until the Police arrived and evacuated the deceased's charred body in a burial rice bag. It is a terrible incident that has left us all devastated.

"Most people in this neighborhood are conscious of the extreme jealous Rabi. Since her marriage some six months ago, she has been in crisis with her co-wife. This is what caused the husband to split them and move to this area late Rabi. I'm not sure, but this incident may not be unrelated to that jealousy, "said the neighbour.

When contacted, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident that the command received information about a fire outbreak in the Gayawa region at about 7 am.

He added that details at their disposal showed that when Sufyanu went to the mosque for morning prayer, the fire started, but returned home to see his house burning on fire and his wife burning out of recognition.

The PPRO said the ground police officers evacuated the deceased body to Murtala Muhammad Hospital and subsequently handed it over to their relatives.

Haruna, a deputy police superintendent, also revealed that police commissioner Habu Sani had directed discreet investigation to unravel the mystery behind the woman's death.
