To fight the coronavirus, the Health Emergencies Program head of the World Health Organization has said, the "whole world needs to be on alert."

Dr Mike Ryan praised China's response to the deadly outbreak, adding, "The challenge is immense but the response has been huge." The WHO will meet on Thursday to determine whether the virus is a global health emergency.

The outbreak's epicenter is the Chinese city of Wuhan.

But the virus has spread throughout China and to at least 16 countries worldwide, including Thailand, France, the United States and Australia.

More than 130 people died in China, and nearly 6,000 were infected.

There is no cure or vaccine specific to this. Yet after treatment, a number of people have recovered.

Dr Ryan of the WHO said an international team of experts were being assembled to go to China and consult with experts there to learn more about how the disease is being transmitted.

"In this event, we are at an important juncture, we believe that these transmission chains can still be interrupted," he said.
