On Saturday, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino told African football leaders that he wants to play their Continental Cup of Nations every four years as part of a reform package designed to lift "African football to the top of the world."

Infantino also told a Rabat seminar attended by delegates from each of the 54 member associations of the Confederation of African Football that he wanted new stadiums in each member state and had allocated $1 billion to fund the ambitious programme.

Currently the Africa Cup of Nations is played every two years, making it unpopular with European clubs.

"What I'm asking you about, and that's your decision, is to address and consider moving every four years to a Nations Cup," said Infantino.

He said he wanted to "revolutionize football in Africa"

"Pele once said that the World Cup would be won by an African side, but that has not happened and it seems we are not making progress.

It must be the day we turn the page today, "said Infantino.

"Our goal has to be to take African football to the world's top," he said.

He said FIFA was "developing a $1bn mobilization plan." "In countries where at least one really good stadium already exists, investments can be made in other infrastructures," he said.
