On Tuesday, the Federal Government raised the alarm about the presence of a malicious and fraudulent coronavirus Ransomware program based on Android that claims to provide alerts on COVID-19 and near-user infections.

In a statement by his special assistant, Mr Segun Adeyemi, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the Ransomware blocks access to the personal data and accounts of users and threatens deletion, unless users pay $100 in Bitcoin within 48 hours.

He said the Ransomware App, detected on the website www.coronavirusapp.site, “prompts users to download an Android App purportedly for coronavirus map tracking and heat map visuals.”

Mohammed said the development reinforced alerts against cyber criminals aimed at leveraging the virus ' rising spread for nefarious gains.

Consequently, the minister called on the general public not to access the Ransomware App and to receive pandemic alerts from only the relevant authorities.
