Zimbabwe confirmed on Friday her first case of coronavirus, a man who returned from Britain on the weekend to his home in the tourist resort town of Victoria Falls.

"This is Zimbabwe's first case of Covid-19," health minister Obadiah Moyo said on ZTV state television.

"The patient is a 38-year-old Caucasian man... who traveled through South Africa to Manchester in the UK on March 7 and returned on March 15 to his home in Victoria Falls," he said.

On Tuesday, the Zimbabwean government announced a series of measures to prevent the virus from spreading –including canceling public and sporting activities, as well as limits on gatherings. The schools are about to close on Tuesday.

The state health system in the region, meanwhile, has suffered from a shortage of equipment and drugs for years.

It came under more pressure last year when hundreds of junior doctors held a three-month strike over conditions and pay at state hospitals–which was then under $200 a month.
