According to Gboyega Akosile, chief press secretary to the governor, several hospitals in the state of Lagos have received patients suffering from chloroquine poisoning.

Citing Oreoluwa Finnih, senior health special assistant to the governor, Akosile cautioned citizens against major chloroquine consumption as a measure to counter coronavirus.

Demand for chloroquine, an oral monotherapy based on artemisinin (oAMTs) for malaria treatment, soared a few hours after President Donald Trump said the medication had been approved for COVID-19 treatment.

Yet US Food and Drug Administration commissioner Stephen Hahn challenged the American president, saying the agency was still trying to explore all possibilities.

TheCable had recorded on Thursday evening how residents were buying the drug into pharmaceutical stores across Lagos and Abuja.

In a Friday tweet, Akosile cautioned people against damaging themselves by using the substance indiscriminately.

“Hospitals now receiving patients suffering from Chloroquine Poisoning, says Gov @jidesanwoolu’s SSA on Health, Dr @Oreoluwa_Finnih. She urged people against massive consumption of Chloroquine as a measure to fight #Coronavirus,” he tweeted.

Earlier, health experts had dismissed speculations that the drug could be used in fighting the virus.
