Google is now accepting applications for its 2022 PhD Fellowship Program from graduate students. Applications for the Google PhD Fellowship Program must be submitted by April 27, 2022.

Google PhD Fellowships provide direct funding to graduate students pursuing a PhD and connect them with a Google Research Mentor.

Google Africa PhD Fellowship Program Fields of Interest

Students who get a Google PhD Fellowship are among the most promising young academics in the world, according to Google researchers and their schools. Students who reflect the future of research in the following subjects are given Fellowships:

Eligibility

  • Full-time graduate students pursuing a PhD and enrolled in an African institution.
  • Undergraduate or Master’s students and professionals may apply.
  • Undergraduate and Master’s student applicants must be currently enrolled, full-time students at an African university.
  • Professionals must be employed/affiliated with an organization registered in Africa.

The Fellowship grant for these applicants is conditional on the awardee enrolling in a full-time PhD program in computer science (or a related subject) at an African university within the calendar year of the Fellowship award, or the award will be forfeited.

The award of the Fellowship does not imply acceptance into a university's PhD program. The awardee must also complete the PhD admissions process at the institute/university where they desire to enroll in a PhD program.

The Fellowship will be granted in accordance with the norms and standards in effect at the institute/university where the awardee is enrolled in a PhD program.

If students do not enroll full-time in a PhD program for the period of the Fellowship, they will forfeit the prize.

Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.

Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.

Google PhD Fellowship Program Evaluation Criteria

Applications are evaluated on the strength of the research proposal, research impact, student academic achievements, and leadership potential.

Research proposals are evaluated for innovative concepts that are relevant to Google’s research areas, as well as aspects of robustness and potential impact to the field.

Proposals should include the direction and any plans of where your work is going in addition to a comprehensive description of the research you are pursuing.

How to Apply for Google PhD Fellowship Program

To complete an application (in English only), you'll need the following documents:

Resume of a student candidate with connections to his or her website and publications (if available)

Transcripts (mark sheets) from the first year/semester of a Bachelor's degree to the present

Proposal for research (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)

2-3 letters of recommendation from people who are knowledgeable about the applicant's work (at least one from the thesis advisor for current PhD students)

The student's PhD program advisor's brief (one-page) CV

Essay response (maximum of 350 words) to the question: What influence will earning this scholarship have on your education? Describe any circumstances that have influenced your need for a scholarship, as well as the educational goals that this scholarship will help you achieve.
