Early-Career Research Fellowship 2022 applications are now being accepted by the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) – The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) is soliciting applications for six (6) Carnegie Corporation of New York Early Career Research Fellowship positions. On July 1, 2022, the six-month fellowship will begin.
The goal is to help early-career academics at African universities develop their ability by allowing them to work with extremely senior and experienced researchers while still teaching at their own institutions. Each CoE is expected to host one research fellow from a country other than the CoE's host country.

ARUA has created thirteen (13) Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in several sectors to support its goals. These CoEs reflect ARUA's current priorities and are expected to greatly boost research and graduate education. Currently, the CoEs are organised as follows: (i) Energy, (ii) Unemployment and Skills Development, (iii) Noncommunicable Diseases, (iv) Inequalities Research, (v) Notion of Identity in Africa, (vi) Migration and Mobility, (vi) Sustainable Food Systems, (viii) Urbanization and Habitable Cities, (ix) Climate and Development, (x) Good Governance, (xi) Post-Conflict Societies, (xii) Water and (xiii) Materials, Energy & Nanotechnology (MEN).
ARUA is giving a six-month Early Career Research Fellowship, which will support the work of these Centers. During this time, prospective research fellows are expected to stay at the CoE's hub university and conduct research related to their current projects. Successful candidates may additionally pursue new research avenues with the permission of the Centre's Director. Candidates should familiarize themselves with the 13 CoEs' ongoing research activities by visiting the ARUA website and the 13 CoEs' websites.
According to ARUA, this Early Career Research Fellowship is critical to cementing the progress made by the CoEs, which is in accordance with the network's key goals. ARUA, therefore, seeks to use this opportunity to enhance the relevance of postgraduate training for early career researchers.

Contract and Remuneration
ARUA will hire successful candidates for a 6-month contract (July – December 2022). The research fellowship will give a stipend of US$2,000 per month, as well as travel and limited logistical support. The Research Fellow will be given office space by the host CoE.
Selection Criteria
- Applicants must hold a PhD in a discipline/sub-discipline relating to the theme area of the applicable Centre of Excellence or be within 5 years of finishing their PhD.
- Full-time faculty members at an ARUA university are eligible to apply.
- Applicants should have a proven track record of success in a position similar to this one (at least one publication in an internationally recognized peer reviewed journal since completing their PhD or evidence of obtaining post-doctoral funding)
- Applicants should show an interest in establishing a strong worldwide reputation and reputation in research through international collaborations.
- Applicants must be willing to spend six months away from their home university and be able to return to it.
- Women who are qualified for this role are particularly encouraged to apply.
- Preference will be given to Candidates who are already working on projects/papers related to any of the focus areas of the ARUA CoEs and need some time off to complete them

Roles and Responsibilities of the Research Fellow
The key roles and responsibilities of the research fellow are as follows:
- Under the supervision of a designated mentor, collaborate with other academics to conduct a variety of relevant projects at the Centre.
- At least one (1) scholarly article, with related policy briefs or blog entries, should be written and published in high-impact journals.
- Participate in technical workshops with fellow researchers and other stakeholders and provide at least one (1) presentation.
- Assist in the formation and strengthening of new collaborations between the specific Centre of Excellence and other relevant research and development groups.
- Assist the Centre in communicating research findings.

- Statement of Purpose, indicating clearly the ARUA CoE of interest (five hundred words)
- Names and addresses of two academic referees.
- Letter of support from applicant’s permanent/home institution
